Policy Statement
Shawnee Community College is committed to creating and sustaining a safe and secure learning and working environment through value-driven practices, proactive risk mitigation, and comprehensive safety planning. This commitment is guided by a culture that emphasizes prevention, preparedness, responsiveness, and accountability.
The College’s Culture of Safety & Security is grounded in the following principles:
- Proactive Risk Management – Identifying and addressing potential risks early through assessment, planning, and preventive measures.
- Comprehensive Planning – Maintaining emergency preparedness, continuity planning, and coordinated response strategies.

The College will implement and maintain systems, processes, and practices designed to identify, assess, and reduce risks to individuals and institutional operations. Safety and security considerations will be embedded within strategic planning, operational decision-making, and facility management.
To support this commitment, the Vice President of Administrative Services (VPAS), in collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team and Campus Security, will ensure the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of these systems and practices in support of a safe and secure learning and work environment that enables student success, employee well-being, and operational continuity, in alignment with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, and supported by ongoing training, communication, and periodic review.
