SUMMARY

The Director of Educational Talent Search is responsible for the development and administration of the Talent Search project which will serve approximately 600 participants.  The responsibilities will include staff hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation; fiscal management, project development, and management; and serving as the Talent Search liaison to the communities.  The Director will also provide direct services to Talent Search participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Public Administration, Social Work, Sociology or a related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching and counseling experience.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged students.

Preferred:

  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience in a pre-college education setting.
  • One (1) year of experience designing, managing, and implementing programs for disadvantaged youth.
  • Knowledge of the purpose of Educational Talent Search.
  • Willingness to maintain flexible and extended hour schedules as part of the position’s responsibilities.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

LEADERSHIP

  1. Create and sustain a supportive College culture that engages employees, recognizes diversity, ensures equity, promotes inclusion, and creates a sense of belonging by fostering an environment of teamwork, accountability, communication and vision.
  2. Conduct Educational Talent Search informational presentations at Shawnee Community College, target schools, and community agencies.
  3. Responsible for the development and implementation of all services to meet the Talent Search objectives.
  4. Train, supervise, and evaluate Educational Talent Search staff.
  5. Serve as the Educational Talent Search liaison to departments, target school administrators, and community agencies.
  6. Coordinate orientation and in-service staff training.
  7. Oversee the recruitment and selection of project participants.
  8. Implement a coordinated approach among components in assessing participants’ needs, delivering services, and monitoring participant’s progress.
  9. Represent the college in local and state organizations and meetings, and maintain contacts with outside agencies as appropriate.

ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT

  1. Prepare and release Educational Talent Search press releases to target area media outlets.
  2. Collaborate with the Executive Director of Marketing and Public Information to create and disseminate Educational Talent Search promotional materials.
  3. Meet individually and in groups with participants regularly to provide information and assistance related to successful school completion and post-secondary entry/re-entry.
  4. Assist participants with exploration, goal setting, planning, and follow-through. Monitor participant progress.
  5. Prepare Talent Search Annual Progress and Performance Reports; ensure accurate and complete data is maintained, and compiled, and regular reports are generated.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  1. Conduct performance evaluations on all staff at least annually.
  2. Supervise all processes necessary to maintain accurate statistics in the database to generate monthly/quarterly/annual reports to evaluate the performance of participants and the attainment of project objectives.

FISCAL

  1. Administer the annual budget.
  2. Responsible for continuation budgets and competitive proposals.

OTHER

  1. Perform other related duties which may be required by the Vice President of Student Affairs (i.e. duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but are generally within the occupational series and responsibility level associated with the employee’s class of work).
  2. General work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Evening or weekend hours may be required to participate in other college activities outside of regular working hours.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Lifting:  Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.  Lifting items up to 20 pounds in weight.

Sitting for prolonged periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT    

Work is primarily in an office/school environment.  Noise levels usually are moderate.
