Shawnee Community College Receives Federal Funding for Truck Driving Expansion

ULLIN, IL (January 17, 2023) – The new year is bringing new opportunities for southern Illinois, specifically for those seeking a new career, thanks to federal legislation recently signed by President Joe Biden.

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) secured more than $182 million through Congressionally-directed spending for Illinois projects in the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Omnibus Appropriations Act.

Shawnee Community College will receive $450,000 to expand the Truck Driving Program, currently available at the main campus in Ullin and the Metropolis Extension Center.

Because of the increased demand for truck drivers, the College will conduct a feasibility study to expand the program to the Cairo Extension Center and hire additional instructors.

“Thanks to our local legislators, this bill provides the College with the opportunity to further expand and strengthen our Truck Driving Program, increasing access to high-demand careers across our district,” said Shawnee Community College Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Darci Cather.
