Applying to TRiO SSS
The TRiO Student Support Services program is here to support and assist you with your success at Shawnee Community College.
The program provides eligible students with a variety of free services and resources to assist in the pursuit of a 4-year degree. Academic support, cultural exposure, personal enhancement and career/ transfer assistance are just some of the many services provided to participants in the program.
Student Support Services (SSS) is proud to be a part of Shawnee Community College located on the main campus in Ullin, Illinois. SSS is funded through the U.S. Department of Education Federal TRiO programs.
As a federally funded TRiO program, SSS provides assistance to 160 eligible students each year. When the 160 student capacity has been met, a waiting list of eligible students will be established.
Services offered include:*
*Eligibility Requirement: First Generation, Income Eligibility, or a Documented Disability
- Supplemental grant aid. Additional money awarded to students who are Pell eligible and meet certain requirements established by the SSS program
- Scholarships that are only eligible to active SSS participants
- Mentoring with SSS professionals
- Cultural events and trips
- Career workshops and advisement
- Transfer trips
- Transfer workshops and advisement
- Study skills workshops
- Personal enhancement workshops
- Computer lab with free printing
- Tutoring with professional and peer tutors
- Academic advisement with an assigned SSS advisor
- Financial literacy workshops and advisement
Academic Advisement
Time and attention are two of the biggest benefits you’ll find when working with your SSS advisor. Students can meet with their SSS advisors by appointment or by walk-in except during Early Registration times. Students are not limited to the amount of time they can spend discussing issues of special concern. Many students will meet one-on-one with an advisor several times throughout the semester.
Confidentiality: TRiO SSS students can remain secure in the fact that all advising contact is kept in strict confidentiality by all TRiO SSS staff. We believe that in order to truly help a student, that student must feel comfortable to address all of their circumstances.
Tutoring & Studying Skills
Each semester, professional and peer tutors are available to provide tutoring in most major academic areas. These tutors are available to all SSS students whenever the student or the Retention Specialist deems that additional study, remediation, or review is necessary for the academic success of the student. Tutors are available in most subject areas and have the opportunity to work consecutively with the assigned student.
