Shawnee Community College Reaffirmed by Higher Learning Commission with High Praise

ULLIN, IL (June 2, 2025) — Shawnee Community College proudly announces the reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)—an achievement that underscores the confidence, strength, and dedication of its faculty, staff, and leadership. For the first time in the College’s history, SCC has also been placed on the Open Pathway, which reflects institutional trust, stability, and a focus on continuous quality improvement.

“This reaffirmation confirms what we already know at Shawnee—our people are exceptional,” said Dr. Tim Taylor, President of Shawnee Community College. “Our faculty and staff are deeply committed to student success, and this milestone validates their professionalism, passion, and pride. To be reaffirmed with no findings, no follow-up reports, and no additional visits is a powerful endorsement of the work happening on our campus every day.”

The 10-year reaffirmation process includes a comprehensive evaluation of the institution’s mission, governance, academic programs, student support services, and financial and operational integrity. Shawnee Community College received strong marks in all areas, with HLC reviewers highlighting the College’s inclusive practices, commitment to lifelong learning, and student-centered culture.

Dr. Kristin Shelby, Accreditation Liaison Officer and Dean of Transfer and Adult Education, noted the broader significance of this moment. “The ability to move to the Open Pathway is a significant milestone in the College’s accreditation history. It demonstrates that Shawnee not only meets, but exceeds the Higher Learning Commission’s guiding values for institutional excellence. It was an honor to lead such a phenomenal group throughout the reaffirmation process. I’m incredibly proud of my team and the hard work and dedication of our entire campus in order to make this possible.”

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are extremely grateful to the HLC Team and the entire College community for their contributions that have made this incredible achievement possible.  Having had the honor to serve on the Board over the past 35 years and to have worked with many amazing professionals who have guided this effort in the past, when the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools was our accrediting body, we look to those efforts, also, as having laid a firm foundation for this award-winning process. I would want our constituents to know that over the past five years, we have made a 180-degree turnaround from our position then, and not only have we accomplished a never-before milestone, but we also have had members of the administration and board to serve as presenters at HLC Conferences telling our amazing story of success. This honor is one we celebrate, but moreover, we view it as a stepping stone to further successes as we continue to build a plan for the future to serve the constituents of our district,” said SCC Board Chairperson Steve Heisner.

Shawnee Community College extends sincere thanks to the many students, employees, board members, and community partners who contributed to this achievement. Soon, the College will announce plans for a public celebration of this milestone, as SCC focuses on the growth and development of programs.
