SCC and the Massac County Youth Fair: A Winning Combination When Clark Williams heard his ticket number called as the winner of a three credit hour certificate from Shawnee Community College, he was all smiles as he made his way to the stage area. As Dr. Tim Bellamey, SCC vice-president of instructional services, reached out to congratulate Williams, Williams shook his head and said "draw again." Although he won the drawing fair and square, Williams wanted to pass along the class certificate worth over $250 to someone else. Educational Financial Aid Assistance Available at SCC The mission of the Shawnee Community College Financial Aid office is to provide education and information, guidance, and support for students and families interested in the financial aid process.
The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, commonly known as the FAFSA. By completing this form, students are automatically applying for a Pell Grant, FSEOG, and MAP for Illinois residents. More... |

Curt Jones Shares His Story with Area Youth During a visit to Shawnee Community College, Curt Jones, inventor and, most famously, the creator of Dippin Dots spoke to area high school students about his entrepreneur experiences, noting his early failures that led to the successful enterprise for which he is famous. Massage Therapy Opportunities at SCC For the past year, students from Kentucky and Missouri have joined Illinois classmates at Shawnee Community College for Massage Therapy program classes. SCC has graduated over 75 students since the program began in 2001. SCC Cosmetology 100% Pass Rate Skilled hair stylists are in great demand, with unlimited opportunities throughout our region and beyond. Boasting a 100% state board examination pass rate, the Shawnee Community College cosmetology program prepares students in a hands-on, true-to-life salon environment.
Combined with class lectures, students obtain the basic knowledge and skills compatible with the Illinois Department and Education guidelines for training license cosmetologists. Students can choose from one-year cosmetology certification, a two-year associate of applied science in cosmetology technology degree, or advance to the cosmetology instructor training certificate program. Governor Quinn Pledges Support to District Governor Pat Quinn today signed a bill into law to create the Alexander-Cairo Port District. The bill is effective immediately and was sponsored by Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) and Representative Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg). The law creates the Alexander-Cairo Port District and gives the board the authority to oversee, operate, and maintain port-related facilities and export trade companies within the boundaries of the district. Pledging his support to the residents of Alexander County, thanked the citizens for their dedication to the area and recognized leaders in the community, including SCC President Dr. Larry Peterson. He went on to say, "I Believe in Community Colleges." The Shawnee Community College district is also home to the Massac-Metropolis Port District, which Governor Quinn signed into law last year. |

Substance Abuse Counselor Training Available at SCC
Shawnee Community College is the only community college in Southern Illinois accredited by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association, Inc. (IAODAPCA). The Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse certificate and degree programs offered by SCC provide counselor training that an individual needs to successfully complete the Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC) certification examination offered by IAODAPCA. Recent Pope County graduate Jake Butler has signed a letter of intent to join the Shawnee Community College Saints for the 2010-11 baseball season. TJ Simmons has received a full scholarship to play baseball for Shawnee Community College in Illinois, signing a letter of intent to join the Saints' baseball team for the upcoming 2010-11 season. Shawnee Community College Educational Talent Search project hosted a Health Saver workshop for area Talent Search high school participants. TRIO Educational Talent Search Program Field Trip
Students from throughout the Shawnee Community College district joined the TRIO Educational Talent Search advisors and other volunteers on a trip to St. Louis on June 8th. The group of 6th & 7th graders plan to spend the day at the St. Louis City Museum. The activity is sponsored by the TRIO Educational Talent Search Program, an academic outreach program designed to provide educational guidance to students. Educational Talent Search is funded by the US Dept. of Education and sponsored by Shawnee Community College.

SCC Students Named to Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team
Tyler Simons of Paducah and McKayla Wolfe of Grand Chain, were recently recognized as members of the Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team at a conference in Springfield. PTK is the international honor society for two-year colleges. The PTK All-USA Academic Team is sponsored annually by PTK, USA Today, and the American Association of Community Colleges. The All-Illinois Academic Team honors outstanding Illinois community college students.

This was the last show for long time SCC automotive instructor Clyde Shafer as the event coordinator and host. Clyde would like to thank all the participants and sponsors over the years, for making the SCC Car Shows the highlight of his year. Clyde and his wife Trish look forward to spending more time together in their retirement, and hope to see everyone return next year, as the show continues with it's new host.

Students enter Shawnee Community College's GED program for many reasons. Some encountered health problems that prevented them from attending classes regularly, while others couldn't finish for personal reasons, others dropped out because a traditional classroom didn't meet their needs.

During the 2010 Honor's Reception, along with student honor recognitions, Shawnee Community College paid tribute to four retiring employees. SCC Hosts 40th Annual Commencement
Shawnee Community College conferred 500 degrees Friday night during its 40th annual commencement ceremony. Graduates include all students who completed their degree during the 2009-2010 school year. As family and friends of graduates gathered in the Edward M. Smith Gymnasium, the soon-to-be-Shawnee Community College alumni began saying goodbye to fellow classmates, faculty, and staff.

Kidz College: Kidz in the Kitchen
Members of the SCC Future Teacher's Organization, Jessica Harvell and Kacy Andros, provided an introduction to cooking, including hands-on student participation. The group prepared puppy chow, homemade bird balls, personalized trail mix and other tasty treats.

Little Egypt Art Association Collection at SCC
Shawnee Community College is hosting art works from members of the Little Egypt Art Association in the main H hallway located on the main campus near Ullin. The collection includes abstract and nonobjective paintings and sculptures. The display is open to the public and will be displayed until August 20th.

Regional Choir Performs at SCC
Over 230 talented students from ten area high schools gathered at Shawnee Community College in May as part of the college's regional choir concert. The high school choir was joined by SCC's concert choir members. The group practiced and performed under the direction of SCC music instructor John Windings.

SCC Mens Golf Team Finishes 5th in NJCAA Regional Tournament
Shawnee sophomore golfer Logan Loftus qualified for the Men’s NJCAA National Tournament for the second consecutive year. Logan finished in the top ten, competing against National Champions John A. Logan and a very strong field, which included not only John A. Logan, but Rend Lake, Parkland, Illinois Central College, SWIC, Springfield College, Kaskaskia, Lincoln, Lewis and Clark, and John Wood.
Young Mr. Loftus represented Shawnee College with not only outstanding play, but with a style of sportsmanship that drew praise from many coaches and the Region Director.
The national tournament begins May 17 in Phoenix.

SCC Library Expands History Collection
Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War are the themes of a collection of printed resources recently acquired by the Shawnee College Library. The new items were added to the books and periodicals already in the SCC library, making more resources available to Abraham Lincoln enthusiasts. The collection, donated to Shawnee Community College by another library, includes items ranging from fairly recent to as far back as 1912. Aaron Chamness, SCC library student worker, created a complete listing of the collection.

Banking Representative Speaks at SCC
First State Bank of Olmsted representative Linda Jones recently visited the college's main campus. Jones spoke to students from several classes, including BUS 155 Personal Finance. She explained the application process to various banking operations including checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit and the loan application process. More... |

The Alpha Lambda Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently inducted new members from throughout the Shawnee Community College district. Student members are chosen from all students having a GPA of 3.5 or better in at least 12 hours of transfer class.

The Illinois Center for Specialized Professional Support recently awarded Shawnee Community College its New Look Innovation Award for the spring 2010 semester. The $1,000 grant targets 10 area low income students who used SMART as their primary form of transportation to attend career and technical program classes at Shawnee Community College.

The SCC Student Senate would like to thank everyone who participated in the Student Senate Blood Drive on April 28th. There were 38 individuals registered as donors, including 9 first time donors. Productive units totaled 34, making this one of the most successful American Red Cross Blood Drives at SCC.

The Shawnee Community College Car Club took a brief break from the upcoming 20th Annual SCC Car Show preparation to visit the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. SCC: Rolling Down the Road
The newest addition to the Shawnee Community College Truck driving program isn't a new tractor or even a new trailer. Earlier this year, the USDA awarded the successful SCC truck driving program a $90,000 grant. The funds were allocated for the purchase of two used trucks, one used trailers, and various safety equipment. In addition, the grant allowed for the purchase of identifying lettering. More... |

Williamson Chooses College of the Ozarks
Kyle Williamson will continue his education and his basketball career at the College of the Ozarks. Kyle completed his two years at Shawnee Community College averaging 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.14 steals per game during his sophomore year. He shot 72% from the free-throw line, 42% from the field and connected on 23 three point field goals. "He was instrumental in us have a great year and reaching the Region 24 Championship game." Triad High School senior Brett Loos recently signed a letter of intent to join the Shawnee Community College Saints' baseball team for the upcoming 2010-11 season. SCC Mens Golf Team Finishes 5th in Rend Lake Invitational
The Saints Golf team placed 5th in the 2010 men's Rend Lake Invitational Tournament this past weekend.
Anthony Dempsey finished second overall again, to earn "first team all-tournament" honors.

Lady Saints Softball Sweeps Forest Park in Double Header
The Lady Saints softball team swept Forest Park in a doubleheader Tuesday, improving their record to 14-16. In Game one, Saints pitcher, Sarah Prusaczyk of Benton threw a 9-0 shutout. In game two, Krista Hoover of Marion, also pitched an entire game for a 3-2 win. The play of the day came in the 5th inning of game two, when Forest Park loaded the bases with two outs. Hannah Hudson fielded a long hit to center, hitting the cutoff man Kacey Raznik at shirtstop, who threw a strike to catcher Kayla Hoffman preventing Forest Park from tying the game.

The SCC Art Club took it's annual trip to the St. Louis Art Museums over the weekend. Among the places they visited were the St. Louis Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis, and the Pulitzer Art Museum. Ready, Set, Go! PTK Easter Egg Hunt a Huge Success!
Over 300 Easter Egg seekers scoured the campus for over 5000 eggs. PTK sponsored the annual event, assisted by the Karnak United Methodist Church, Century Beta Club, and the Vienna Beta Club. PTK sponsor Craig Bradley said, "The largest group were the little kids, ages birth to age 2. We had to hunt inside this year because of the rain, but that didn’t seem to dampen the kid’s spirits."

2010 High School Art Competition Reception
Judge Julia Pfieffer critiques one of the many pieces at the 2010 High School art competiion at SCC April 2nd. Prizes were awarded in 3D work, painting, drawing, pastels/oil crayons, and photography/graphic design, with each category receiving first, second, third and honorable mention awards. All district high schools were invited to participate in the competition.
